What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the Igloo Trailmate Journey is the wheeled cooler that gets recommended when terrain is the constraint. outdoorgearlab.com highlighted its 'giant wheels with high clearance' as a real differentiator, and r/OutdoorsGear commenters echo that the wheels actually handle gravel and uneven ground rather than digging in like the small plastic wheels on cheaper rolling coolers. Built-in extras — bottle openers, rod holders, a butler-tray lid — earn it 'envy of the campsite' comments in verified-purchase reviews.
What reviewers liked
- outdoorgearlab.com singles out the all-terrain wheel system as a meaningful upgrade over typical rolling coolers
- Specialist communities confirm the large wheels handle sand and rough ground where smaller plastic wheels fail
- Integrated bottle openers, rod holders, and butler-tray lid add genuine functional value
- 70-qt capacity hits a sweet spot for family camping and beach days
Where it falls short
- High-trust r/CampingGear comment explicitly flags weaker ice retention versus comparably priced wheeled coolers
- At $230 it sits at the top of the budget/mid-tier price band
- More moving parts (wheels, axles, telescoping handle) than a basic cooler — more potential failure points
- Some specialist-community feedback says the Igloo IMX outperforms it thermally if you don't need the wheels

The consensus also surfaces a real weakness. A high-trust r/CampingGear comment, referencing YouTube comparison tests, explicitly says the Trailmate 'doesn't do well' on ice retention relative to competitors, and another camping subreddit thread is more positive but notes you have to prep it properly. So the trust-weighted read is: best-in-class as a haul-it-anywhere wheeled cooler, mid-pack as a thermal box. If you're moving a loaded 70-qt cooler across sand or a gravel access road regularly, that tradeoff is easy. If ice retention is your top priority and terrain is flat, the wheels are paying for performance you don't need.
- Spacious 70-quart capacity fits up to 112 cans
- Tackle sand & other challenging terrain with the superior traction & ground clearance of 10-inch, never-flat, smooth-ride wheels
- Pull your load 50% easier thanks to the comfort & leverage of our horizontal dual-trigger steel Glide handle that has locking & telescoping functions
- THERMECOOL foam — a cleaner, eco-friendly insulation — in body & lid provides superior ice retention performance
- Tie-down hooks (using bungee cords or rope, not included) give you more carry options, making it easy to haul things like towels, quad chairs or a surfboard to your destination
I would watch YouTube reviews. I saw a comparison with a bunch, and just based on the ice retention, this one doesn't do well.
I have this exact cooler. At 66$, it's worth it. I use it a lot. Keeps things cold and the ice lasts. Def recommend it.
