What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black remains the benchmark dual-tower air cooler years after launch. tomshardware.com's verified coverage uses it as the reference point even when reviewing the newer NH-D15 G2, and r/buildapc threads marked high-trust in our data consistently call it "one of the best options in terms of noise and cooling performance" with proven long-term reliability. aphnetworks.com calls it an unquestionably excellent choice for quiet-PC enthusiasts.
What reviewers liked
- High-trust r/buildapc consensus rates it among the best air coolers for noise and reliability
- Verified coverage at tomshardware.com still uses it as the reference dual-tower air cooler
- 13,471 verified-purchase Amazon reviews at 4.8 corroborate long-term satisfaction
- All-black chromax finish addresses the long-running aesthetic complaint about Noctua's beige fans
Where it falls short
- Physically very large; RAM and case-clearance issues are a recurring complaint
- On the hottest modern CPUs, community threads note it can run warm versus a 360 AIO
- Bundled NF-A15 fans are bested by the newer NF-A12x25 on the NH-U12A
- Premium price for an air cooler given strong sub-$40 competition from Thermalright

Reviewers we read are honest about the limitations. The cooler is physically large and can interfere with tall RAM and some ITX cases, the bundled NF-A15 fans are excellent but no longer class-leading versus the newer NF-A12x25, and r/Noctua/r/hardware threads note that on the hottest current CPUs (e.g. 9800X3D, 14900K) it can run warm under sustained all-core loads where a 360 AIO has headroom. With 13,471 verified-purchase Amazon reviews averaging 4.8, the volume signal aligns with expert consensus rather than overriding it. For buyers who want air cooling, no pump to worry about, and a 6+ year service life, it remains the safe pick.
- Proven premium heatsink (more than 300 awards and recommendations from international hardware websites), now available in an all-black design that goes great with many colour schemes
- Extra-wide 140mm dual-tower design with 6 heatpipes and dual fans provides maximum quiet cooling efficiency on a par with many all-in-one watercoolers, ideal for overclockers and silent-enthusiasts!
- Dual-fan design with renowned, award-winning NF-A15 140mm fans with Low-Noise Adaptors and PWM for automatic speed control: Full cooling performance under load, whisper quiet at idle!
- Includes high-end NT-H1 thermal paste and SecuFirm2 mounting system for easy installation on Intel LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200, LGA115x and AMD AM5 & AM4 (offset mounting option for best efficiency)
- Renowned Noctua quality backed up by 6-year manufacturer’s warranty, deluxe choice for Intel Core & Core Ultra (e.g. 285K, 265K, 245K) and AMD Ryzen (e.g. 9950X, 9900X, 9700X, 9600X)
The NH-D15 chromax.black is an all-black version of Noctua’s award-winning flagship model NH-D15 premium-quality quiet CPU cooler. Thanks to the same proven dual-tower heatsink design and NF-A15 PWM fans, it stays true to the NH-D15’s successful formula of rivalling the performance of all-in-one water coolers…
For air coolers it's one of the best options in terms of noise and cooling performance, and given how old it is it's proven itself as a reliable ...
The fans are just average, we all know it, but they work quite well for low RPM and the Noctua mounting works quite well for an even pressure.
