The consensus
What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro is a long-running favorite whose strengths and flaws are equally well documented. forum.headphones.com calls the velour-padded comfort "spectacular," sonarworks rates it "good, especially for the price" with replaceable parts, and high-trust r/headphones threads repeatedly highlight its soundstage and imaging for gaming — "every sound, explosion, wind, rustling branches" rendered convincingly. The consistent counterpoint, raised by both expert and community sources, is the treble.
What reviewers liked
- High-trust community consensus rates it excellent for gaming soundstage and imaging
- Praised for spectacular velour comfort and replaceable, repairable parts
- Decades-long track record with 20,000+ verified reviews at 4.6
Where it falls short
- Both expert and community sources flag bright, fatiguing treble
- r/HeadphoneAdvice posters call the bass overpowered for long listening
- The 250-ohm version benefits from a dedicated amp

Across the reviewers we read, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro is a long-running favorite whose strengths and flaws are equally well documented. forum.headphones.com calls the velour-padded comfort "spectacular," sonarworks rates it "good, especially for the price" with replaceable parts, and high-trust r/headphones threads repeatedly highlight its soundstage and imaging for gaming — "every sound, explosion, wind, rustling branches" rendered convincingly.
The consistent counterpoint, raised by both expert and community sources, is the treble. thehonestaudiophile calls it "one of the more pleasing, bright headphones" but admits it "can be fatiguing," and r/HeadphoneAdvice posters say the lows are "heavily overpowered" and the highs "too heavy" for long sessions. Defenders in r/headphones counter that the bass is "the right amount" and that EQ tames the treble easily. The trust-weighted takeaway: a fun, spacious, gaming-friendly open-back that's been a category staple for decades, provided you're tolerant of (or willing to EQ) its bright tuning, and ideally pair the 250-ohm version with an amp.

- Handcrafted in Germany
- Traditional craftsmanship with modern excellence: Designed and built by a trusted legacy brand excelling for more than 100 years.
The DT990 are heavily overpowered in the low frequencies and the highs are too heavy. In the long run thats no fun at all.
They sound fantastic. For someone who is casually gaming, these are amazing. Every sound, explosion, wind, rustling branches, etc. sound amazing.
