The consensus
What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the Stihl MS 162 is positioned as Stihl's entry-level homeowner gas saw — small, light, fuel-efficient, and aimed at trimming, limbing, and occasional small-log cutting rather than firewood production. The supplied signals don't include a high-trust independent test, but high-trust r/Chainsaw threads consistently describe it as 'fine for the price' and 'gets the job done,' with one buyer noting it bogs and feels less powerful than the older MS 170 it replaces. Verified-purchase data lands at 4.3 stars across 322 reviews, slightly below the Husqvarna Rancher line but in line with expectations for a smaller saw.
What reviewers liked
- Broad verified-purchase signal (322 reviews, 4.3 stars) for a small homeowner saw
- r/Chainsaw consensus accepts it as a reasonable entry-level Stihl for occasional use
- Lightweight and fuel-efficient compared to the older MS 170 it replaces
- Access to the Stihl dealer service network, which community reviewers value
Where it falls short
- High-trust r/Chainsaw threads explicitly note it bogs down and is less powerful than the older MS 170
- No high-trust independent expert test in the supplied signals to corroborate marketing claims
- Not suited for firewood cutting beyond very small logs, per community consensus
- Priced close to more capable Husqvarna 120 Mark III, which reviewers note as a direct competitor

Verified-purchase data lands at 4.3 stars across 322 reviews, slightly below the Husqvarna Rancher line but in line with expectations for a smaller saw. Community discussion on r/Chainsaw and r/stihl treats it as a reasonable first chainsaw for irregular use, especially for buyers who want into the Stihl dealer-service ecosystem at the lowest entry point. Multiple threads compare it to the Husqvarna 120 at similar pricing.
The honest read is that this is a light-duty saw and reviewers across the board want buyers to know that. If you need to process firewood, the consensus pushes you up to the MS 250/MS 271 class or the Husqvarna Rancher line; if you just need to clean up a yard, the trust-weighted signals say the MS 162 is competent.

It works good. I do notice the bogging down and the lesser power compared to my older 170. But for the price can't complain. It got the job done ...
The Stihl MS 162 and Hus 120 II are similar priced at about £150. The MS 171 is like £80 more, the Husk 130 is only about £30 more than the 120 II.
