Are 8x42 binoculars too big for travel?

A 42mm objective is larger and heavier than a pocketable 25mm or 28mm compact, but it gathers far more light for brighter low-light and dawn/dusk viewing. Many travelers accept the extra bulk for the optical upgrade; if packability is the priority, an 8x25 or 10x28 compact is the better fit.
