Are cheap Amazon mountain bikes like Mongoose or Outroad safe for real trails?

High-trust threads on r/MTB and r/mountainbiking repeatedly warn that big-box bikes like the Mongoose Impasse and similar foldable MTBs are fine for flat paths and very mild terrain but components fail quickly under genuine trail use. They're not recommended by specialist communities for technical singletrack.
