Are Japanese chisels worth it for a beginner?

Specialist consensus in r/JapaneseWoodworking is mixed. The laminated hard/soft steel construction takes a very keen edge and holds it well, but the blades are more brittle, the hoops need to be set, and the sharpening learning curve is steep. Most threads recommend learning on a Western bench set first unless you're committed to Japanese workflow.
