Are pin-style or ratcheting jack stands safer?

Many mechanics prefer pin-type stands because a solid steel pin can't slip the way a ratchet pawl theoretically could, which is why heavy-duty truck and equipment stands almost universally use pins. Ratcheting stands from reputable brands are widely used and convenient for quick height changes; whichever you choose, inspect the locking mechanism and never exceed the rated capacity.
