Are pull-through sharpeners ruining my knives?

Mainstream reviewers say budget carbide pull-throughs aggressively scrape metal and can leave visible grooves, which is fine for cheap kitchen knives but not recommended for premium blades. Higher-end pull-throughs and electric machines with precision angle guides remove far less material per pass.
