Do all-weather rubber/TPE mats damage carpet underneath?

r/AutoDetailing threads suggest the opposite - the weight and coverage of heavy rubber or TPE mats protects the factory carpet from dirt working its way underneath, provided the mats are properly anchored and don't slip onto the pedals.
