Do cooperative board games work for solo play?

Many do. Spirit Island, Forbidden Island, and Pandemic can all be played solo by controlling multiple roles, and several newer co-ops are designed with solo modes in mind. If solo play is a priority, check the player count on the box for an explicit '1' as a starting point.
