Do I actually need a smart home hub in 2025?

If you're only using a few Wi-Fi plugs or bulbs you can run them through Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home directly. A dedicated hub becomes worthwhile once you want Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Thread devices, reliable local automation, or a single point of control across multiple brands — Matter has reduced the need somewhat but hasn't eliminated it.
