Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?

It depends on the model. The Sensi ST55 is explicitly designed to work in most homes without a C-wire, and ecobee's Enhanced and Premium include a Power Extender Kit (PEK) that lets them install without one. The Emerson Sensi Touch (ST75), by contrast, requires a C-wire per Emerson's own listing.
