Do I need an impeller mod or other aftermarket work on a new gas snow blower?

Owner threads on r/Snowblowers commonly recommend an impeller mod (closing the gap between impeller blade and housing) on budget single-stage and entry two-stage machines like the Troy-Bilt Squall to improve wet-snow throw. Premium machines from Honda and Ariens generally don't need it out of the box, per the same threads.
