Do I need to set the wood species on a pin meter?

Yes. Different species have different electrical resistance, and community threads repeatedly note that wrong-species settings can produce readings off by several percentage points. Better meters have a built-in species correction table; cheaper ones group everything into hardwood/softwood, which is workable but coarser.
