Do leather/PU desk mats work for gaming?

High-trust mouse-enthusiast community discussion is consistently negative: PU leather feels sticky, tracking and flicking are poor, and most optical sensors don't love the surface. Leather pads are an office/aesthetic product, not a gaming surface.
