Do smart light switches need a neutral wire?

Many do. Most Wi-Fi switches like the Kasa and Tapo models require a neutral wire, which older homes may lack. Lutron's Caseta and Diva dimmers are notable exceptions designed to work without a neutral wire, which is why they're frequently recommended for older or pre-1980s wiring. Always check your switch box before buying.
