HO scale vs N scale — which should I buy?

HO is larger (1:87), easier to handle and detail, and is the focus of this roundup. N scale (1:160) packs more railroad into less space but is fiddlier for beginners. A couple of N-scale sets appeared in the raw candidate list but were excluded here because they don't belong in an HO roundup.
