Is a higher Amazon star rating a reliable way to choose?

It's a useful signal but not a verdict. Amazon averages are gameable and a 4.9 rating on only a couple dozen reviews carries far less weight than a 4.6 across tens of thousands. Cross-check review volume alongside the average, and be skeptical of very high ratings on very low review counts.
