Is a higher thread count actually better?

Not really. Multiple r/Bedding threads and expert reviewers in our data caution that thread count is heavily gamed, especially above ~500, where manufacturers use multi-ply yarns to inflate the number. A genuine 300–500 thread count made from long-staple cotton routinely outperforms a 1000-thread-count set made from shorter, lower-grade fiber.
