Is a play-top cage worth it?

Play-top cages give birds an out-of-cage perching and stretching area and are popular with parrot and conure owners in the reviews we read. The trade-off some community members raise is that an open or play top makes it easier for unsupervised birds to roam, and that flat removable play tops are generally considered easier to use than fixed archtop designs.
