Is MDF or solid wood better for a coffee table?

Reddit threads on r/furniture and r/BuyItForLife are blunt: solid wood lasts longer and refinishes, MDF/engineered wood is fine for years of normal use but doesn't survive water damage or multiple moves. Most tables in the sub-$200 range are MDF with veneer, regardless of brand.
