Should I use a pressure-mounted or hardware-mounted pet gate?

For the top of stairs, the consensus across r/SafeBabyGates and r/daddit threads is unambiguous: use a hardware-mounted (drilled) gate, because pressure mounts can fail when a child or large dog leans on them. Pressure mounts are appropriate for doorways, hallways, and bottoms of stairs where a fall risk is lower, and they're far easier to relocate or remove from rentals.
