Should I use tablets or a filter like LifeStraw?

They solve different problems. Filters remove sediment, protozoa, and bacteria immediately but generally do not inactivate viruses; chemical tablets inactivate viruses and bacteria but do not remove sediment or improve clarity. Many experienced travelers carry both: a filter to clear turbid water and tablets as a lightweight chemical backup.
