What's a good on-road RC car for a complete beginner?

Beginners are usually steered toward ready-to-run (RTR) models that include a battery, charger, and gyro for stability. Smaller 1/24 scale drift cars are inexpensive, slower, and forgiving, while a gyro-equipped 1/14 rally car offers more performance once you're comfortable. Lower top speeds and included spare tires make early crashes less costly.
