What's the difference between a file and a rasp?

A file has finer, machined teeth and is generally used on metal or for smoothing wood, while a rasp has coarser, individually punched (sometimes hand-stitched) teeth designed to remove wood quickly. Many shoppers end up needing both: a rasp for fast shaping and a file for finishing or metalwork.
