What's the difference between a Matter controller and a Thread border router?

A Matter controller is the brain that runs commissioning and automations for Matter devices. A Thread border router relays low-power Thread mesh traffic onto your home Wi-Fi/Ethernet. Many modern hubs (like the Aqara M3) do both, but cheaper hubs may only do one — check the spec sheet.
