What's the difference between a mechanic's tool set and a socket set?

A pure socket set is just drive tools, sockets, extensions and adapters. A mechanic's tool set bundles in combination wrenches, hex keys, screwdriver bits and sometimes pliers. Most of the big-box kits reviewed here are technically mechanic's sets, which is usually a better starting point for a home garage than a socket set alone.
