What's the difference between a torchiere and an arc lamp?

A torchiere points its light upward to bounce off the ceiling for soft, indirect room lighting. An arc lamp uses a long curved arm to suspend a downward-facing shade over a sofa or table — essentially a pendant on a stand. Torchieres are better for general ambient lighting; arc lamps are better for task lighting over seating.
