What temperature rating do I need for a 3-season sleeping bag?

A 20°F to 30°F rating is the standard sweet spot for spring, summer, and fall use in most of North America. Many of the bags here are rated around 20°F, which gives a margin of warmth for cooler shoulder-season nights; remember that comfort ratings typically run several degrees warmer than the survival/limit rating printed on the tag.
