Wire shelves are lighter, cheaper, and let dust and light pass through, but small items tip and slide, and community threads note that loose tools fall through the gaps. Solid steel or MDF shelves stack bins and boxes more cleanly and slide items in and out without snagging, but they trap dust and add weight to assembly.
