What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the 5-piece kit is positioned as the entry point into Ring's alarm ecosystem—and the kit reviewers specifically call out for apartments and condos. Consumer Reports has the 5-piece kit in its database, and CNET's review concludes it's a 'cheap, reliable DIY system' suitable for buyers who want straightforward coverage with optional professional monitoring. The Amazon listing itself describes the kit as 'a great fit for condos and apartments,' a positioning that mainstream press has largely accepted.
What reviewers liked
- Consumer Reports has tested the exact 5-piece kit, giving it high-tier coverage
- CNET calls it a cheap, reliable DIY option with optional pro monitoring
- Smallest, cheapest entry into Ring's alarm ecosystem—well-suited to apartments and condos
- r/Ring sentiment treats the alarm sensors as more reliable than Ring's cameras
- Fully portable—nothing to hardwire, easy to move between rentals
Where it falls short
- Only one contact sensor and one motion detector—most homes will need add-ons immediately
- Cellular backup and 24/7 monitoring require a paid Ring Protect plan
- r/Ring threads raise Amazon-ecosystem lock-in concerns that apply equally here
- No native Apple HomeKit support
- Once you start adding sensors, the price advantage over the 8-piece kit shrinks fast

The r/Ring community consensus tracks with the 8-piece picture: the alarm hardware is regarded as more dependable than Ring's cameras, monthly monitoring is cheap, and the app is solid. Renters in particular appreciate that there's nothing to hardwire and the whole system can move with you. Homedepot.com verified-purchase reviewers add the same notes about easy setup and the chime-on-open feature being more useful day-to-day than the armed alarm itself.
The caveats are coverage and base-station placement. Five pieces—one base, one keypad, one contact sensor, one motion detector, one range extender—really is apartment-scale. Anyone with more than one exterior door will be buying add-on sensors immediately, which erodes the price advantage versus the 8-piece kit on sale.
- A great fit for condos and apartments, this Alarm Kit includes one Base Station, one Keypad, one Contact Sensor, one Motion Detector, and one Range Extender.
- Includes an intuitive Keypad that can arm and disarm your Alarm and Contact Sensors that detect when doors or windows open.
- Choose the Ring Alarm Kit that fits your needs and detect even more with additional Alarm Sensors and accessories (sold separately) at any time.
- Receive mobile notifications when your system is triggered and monitor all your Ring devices all through the Ring app.
- More peace of mind. Subscribe to a compatible Ring Protect Plan (sold separately) to Arm your Alarm from anywhere, keep your system online if the Wi-Fi goes down, and more. Plus, get 24/7 Professional Monitoring for emergency police, fire and medical response, and more.
- Better with Alexa - Arm and disarm your Ring Alarm using only your voice with a Ring Protect subscription (sold separately).
The second-gen Ring alarm security system is a worthy purchase, whether you're just getting started with an alarm system or already have Ring cameras.

The Ring Alarm Pro checked all of my boxes. It's wireless, there's a lot of sensor options, it's got monitoring and plans are pretty reasonable.
TBH I'm pretty bad about remembering to activate it when I leave the house, but I like the fact that it chimes whenever a door or window opens ...
