What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus-E is the default recommendation when someone on r/homeassistant or r/homeautomation asks which Zigbee coordinator to pair with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, or openHAB. Multiple high-trust r/homeassistant threads describe months of use with 'not a single issue or device dropped,' and commenters specifically contrast it favorably with the SONOFF Wi-Fi Zigbee bridges, which the same users found laggy. The dongle ships pre-flashed with coordinator firmware, includes an external antenna for better mesh range, and works as a router as well.
What reviewers liked
- Strong r/homeassistant consensus on reliability over months of use
- External antenna and bundled USB extension help mesh range and reduce USB 3.0 interference
- Works with the major Zigbee stacks: ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT, openHAB
- Excellent value at under $30 with a 4.6 Amazon average across 3,471 reviews
Where it falls short
- Not a standalone hub — requires Home Assistant or a similar host platform
- Wide aluminum housing can physically block neighboring USB ports
- Multiple chipset variants (EFR32 vs CC2652P) create buyer confusion in r/homeassistant threads
- Zigbee only — no Z-Wave, Thread, or Matter support

The dongle ships pre-flashed with coordinator firmware, includes an external antenna for better mesh range, and works as a router as well. Specialist community guidance in the supplied threads emphasizes using the bundled USB extension cable to keep the dongle away from USB 3.0 ports, which are a known source of 2.4 GHz interference for Zigbee radios.
The trade-offs are scope and setup curve. It is not a self-contained hub — it requires Home Assistant or another Zigbee stack running on a host machine. r/homeassistant commenters also note the aluminum body is wide enough to block adjacent USB ports, and that EFR32-based variants and CC2652P variants both exist, which can confuse first-time buyers.
- Pre-flashed with Zigbee coordinator firmware based on EZNet 6.10.3 out of box
- Support smart home platforms like Home Assistant, openHAB, Zigbee2MQTT and so on
- Based on EFR32MG21
- +20dBm output gain
- Aluminum housing effectively reduces signal interference from peripherals
Had it a couple months now, and not a single issue or device dropped. I tried the sonoff wifi hub, but the latency/lag was disappointing.
you can plug it in directly though I'll mention that a usb extension is advised though (for mitigating interference) since we're on the subject.
