The consensus
What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the BowFlex SelectTech 840 is the most popular adjustable by volume, with a 4.8-star average across more than 7,600 reviews, and garagegymreviews.com gives it 4 out of 5 stars chiefly on value. It replaces multiple bells in a small footprint, which makes it a sensible entry point for new lifters working in the 8-40 lb range. The consensus caveat is loud, however: r/kettlebell users repeatedly say it works for RDLs, squats and swings but is clumsy or even painful for snatches, cleans and get-ups, with one calling out balance issues, and several warn the plastic-heavy internals can break if dropped.
What reviewers liked
- Enormous, highly positive verified-purchase base (4.8 stars, 7,600+ reviews)
- garagegymreviews.com praises the value and space savings
- 8-40 lb range and quick adjustment suit beginners building a base
Where it falls short
- r/kettlebell users say balance is poor for snatches, cleans and get-ups
- Reported to break if dropped due to plastic internals
- 40 lb ceiling is limiting for stronger lifters

It works for me for RDLs, squats, and swings. Its terrible for Get-ups. I do not like it as a kettlebell but it can be functional in some ways.
The weight is adjustable up to 40 pounds. Generally most men will need to use heavier weights for important drills, most of the time.
