What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the Fitarc joist-mount bar is the leading affordable answer for people whose only option is ceiling joists — typically basement or garage gyms with exposed beams or low ceilings. Amazon retailer reviews (4.5/5 across 997) and walmart.com verified-purchase comments describe it as sturdy and a strong value, and a r/Calisthenic thread about low-ceiling setups specifically points toward joist-mount designs like this one. The more important signal is from high-trust subreddits discussing the category itself.
What reviewers liked
- 4.5/5 across nearly 1,000 Amazon reviews and positive walmart.com verified-purchase comments
- Solves the low-ceiling and exposed-joist case that wall mounts can't
- Heavy-gauge steel construction described as solid by reviewers
- Compact footprint that doesn't intrude into the room
- Mid-budget pricing for a permanent-install solution
Where it falls short
- High-trust r/Carpentry and r/DIY commenters note that joist-mount geometry loads screws in tension, which is weaker than shear loading in a wall mount
- Requires identifying and accurately drilling into ceiling joists; not a job for renters
- Shipped hardware is basic; specialist threads recommend upgrading to proper lag bolts
- Grips are described in walmart.com reviews as a bit thin/small
- Not appropriate where joists are sistered, notched, or compromised

The more important signal is from high-trust subreddits discussing the category itself. r/Carpentry commenters flag that screws loaded by pulling straight down on a joist rely on wood-fiber pullout strength, which is weaker than the shear loading you get with a wall mount; r/DIY and r/crossfit threads recommend lag bolts (not wood screws) and ideally hardware sized for the joist depth. None of those threads condemn the Fitarc specifically, but they are an honest caveat reviewers should know about before choosing this format.
For users with the right joists, the right hardware, and a sensible body weight, the consensus is that Fitarc is a sensible, affordable pick. For heavier users, kippers, or anyone unsure about their ceiling framing, specialist communities steer toward a wall mount instead.

If you screw up into the bottom of the beam the strength is in the wood fibers and screw threads, which can be much weaker.
My dead simple chin-up/TRX rig hangs directly off two beefy screw hooks threaded about 3½" into the joists. Nothing heavy looming overhead.
