What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the Howard Leight Impact Sport is the most consistently recommended electronic muff in the category. Verified-purchase listings cite its directional microphones amplifying range commands to a safe 82 dB while clamping gunshots, and r/gundeals and r/liberalgunowners posters repeatedly call it their long-term go-to, with one r/liberalgunowners thread stating it has 'better sound quality than Razor Slims' as the best electronic option under $100. The disagreement worth surfacing is protection level: its NRR is 22 dB, and an r/guns commenter argues that's 'very low' and 'insufficient by themselves even for outdoor shooting,' while another r/gundeals user found the cups too narrow for large ears and had to double up.
What reviewers liked
- Massive verified-purchase base (4.7 across 55,766 reviews) and strong long-term community endorsement
- Sound amplification praised for hearing range commands; impulse limiter cuts gunshots to a safe 82 dB
- Affordable and widely compatible with aftermarket gel pads that reviewers say improve comfort
Where it falls short
- 22 dB NRR is on the low side; an r/guns poster calls it insufficient alone for some shooting
- Stock cups run narrow for large ears per r/gundeals; many users double up or add gel pads
- Reviewers note the earcups get warm on hot days

The disagreement worth surfacing is protection level: its NRR is 22 dB, and an r/guns commenter argues that's 'very low' and 'insufficient by themselves even for outdoor shooting,' while another r/gundeals user found the cups too narrow for large ears and had to double up. A recurring fix mentioned on YouTube and r/CAguns is aftermarket gel pads, which reviewers say noticeably improve both seal and comfort. Mainstream firearms reviewers note slight warmth on hot days but rate overall performance highly.
Net, the consensus positions this as the best-rounded pick for range use: huge user base, useful amplification, easy controls, and a low-enough price that buying gel pads still leaves it competitive. Buyers needing maximum raw decibel reduction are steered elsewhere.

- Low-Profile, Comfortable Fit
- Air Flow Control Technology allows for a slim, low profile ear cup to ensure firearm stock clearance; padded, adjustable headband provides a comfortable, custom fit; compact, folding design for convenient storage
- Energy Efficient, Easy Operation
- Automatic shut-off feature after four hours saves battery (350-hour lifespan); easy battery compartment access; AUX input jack for music players and scanners; single power/volume control knob
- Kit Includes
- Earmuff, 2 AAA batteries; 3.5 mm connection cord; replacement ear cushions available
The earmuffs you were talking about offer very low noise reduction and are IMO insufficient by themselves even for outdoor shooting.
The Impacts did not seem to block nearly as much sound and I had to double up with them for everything. They were too narrow for my big ears too ...
