What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the LEGO Technic Off-Road Race Buggy (42164) is the most frequently recommended starter Technic set under $25. On r/legotechnic, multiple threads — including one from a builder describing it as their first Technic ever — call out the working steering radius, the suspension and the small piston engine as genuinely impressive for a sub-$20 set. One r/lego thread from a first-time Technic builder summarises the appeal: 'lots of pins, axles, and gears, but I think I'm hooked.' The set isn't flawless.
What reviewers liked
- High-trust r/legotechnic consensus repeatedly recommends it as the best first Technic set
- Working steering, suspension and four-cylinder piston engine packed into a sub-$25 set
- 2,292 Amazon reviews at 4.8 stars — broad verified-purchase corroboration
- Frequently called out by reddit builders as an ideal candidate for aftermarket motorization
Where it falls short
- r/legotechnic builders report the engine pistons can bind during operation
- No motorized functions included — powered play requires buying a motor separately
- Small physical footprint means less display presence than larger Technic vehicles
- Limited replay value once built, per reddit discussions about its short build time

The set isn't flawless. An r/legotechnic post from another first-time builder notes the engine pistons 'get stuck a little bit' even when assembled correctly, and other reddit builders point out that, while moddable with a motor, the Buggy doesn't include any powered functions out of the box. Verified-purchase reviewers on Amazon, Target and Walmart largely echo the reddit consensus on value.
For a gift to a kid or adult curious about Technic, the trust-weighted consensus is that this is the safest entry point in the current lineup.

- 4-cylinder engine – This car toy features authentic details inspired by real buggy race cars, including a moving 4-cylinder engine

This one was worth it and if you have a motor, I think modding this would be insanely fun. The turning radius is fantastic and the suspension is really cool.
I LOVE these smaller Technic sets. They show a lot of really cool building techniques. Plus, they look fantastic.
