What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the LEGO Technic Volvo FMX Truck & EC230 Electric Excavator (42175) is the most ambitious construction-themed Technic set in the current lineup, and reviewer opinion is genuinely split. brickset.com's long-form review praises the roughly 70cm display footprint and the truck-and-excavator pairing. r/legotechnic threads from owners describe pneumatic functions that 'work substantially better than the videos I have seen' and call it 'a very nice set for $200.' The pushback from r/legotechnic is equally real and comes from high-trust community voices.
What reviewers liked
- brickset.com long-form review highlights the ~70cm display footprint and construction-vehicle pairing
- r/legotechnic owners report pneumatic functions on the excavator work better than expected
- 4.8 Amazon rating across 299 reviews, with verified-purchase customers praising the build length
- Two distinct vehicles plus trailer give it more variety than a single-model Technic build
Where it falls short
- Multiple high-trust r/legotechnic threads describe play functions as 'lacking' at the $200 price point
- A widely-upvoted r/legotechnic post says it 'looks less and less impressive the more I sit on it'
- YouTube reviewers explicitly note this is the most expensive non-motorized Technic set on sale
- No included Power Functions / Powered Up motors, despite the construction-vehicle theme inviting them

The pushback from r/legotechnic is equally real and comes from high-trust community voices. A 96-vote thread explicitly states the set 'looks less and less impressive the more I sit on it,' and YouTube build reviews note this is 'the most expensive non-motorized Technic set' currently sold — there's no Power Functions or Powered Up motor in the box, despite the construction-vehicle theme. Several reddit builders compare it unfavorably on play features to older motorized Technic construction sets.
The trust-weighted consensus: a strong display piece and a long, satisfying build of two vehicles plus a flatbed trailer, but buyers expecting motorized excavator functions at this price will be disappointed.
- Volvo truck toy with buildable excavator – Inspire kids to build their own heavy duty construction vehicle with flatbed trailer, toy excavator and charging station
- Working truck features – Check out the 6-cylinder moving piston engine then steer the truck toy into position, detach the trailer and fold down the ramp to roll the excavator off
- Explore the excavator – Kids can swivel the excavator 360 degrees on its tracks then use the pneumatic pump to lift and lower the scoop
- Toy electric charging station – Kids who love vehicle playsets can have fun lifting and lowering the charging station using the scoop and chains, ready to attach it to the electric excavator toy
- A building toy gift for kids who love construction vehicles – This set makes a great gift idea for boys and girls ages 10 and up who love truck toys and LEGO Technic building challenges
- An introduction to engineering – LEGO Technic buildable model sets feature realistic movement and mechanisms to introduce young LEGO builders to the universe of engineering
- Measurements – 2,274 piece set with a model measuring over 3 in. (8 cm) high, 26.5 in. (68 cm) long and 5 in. (13 cm) wide
96 votes, 48 comments. I was in love with this set when I first saw it but it looks less and less impressive the more I sit on it.
It's a very nice set for $200 and does take a good amount of time to build the truck and excavator, the trailer was the easiest of the 3 to build.
