Across the reviewers we read, the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX is treated as the definitive value prime for Nikon's APS-C DSLRs. kenrockwell.com notes it autofocuses perfectly on every Nikon DX body, dslrbodies.com praises how small and light it is and how nicely it balances on consumer DSLRs, and photoartfromscience.com describes it as fast-focusing with the natural perspective of a full-frame 50mm equivalent. The community verdict is even more emphatic.

The community verdict is even more emphatic. Multiple r/Nikon threads call it the best value-per-dollar DX lens available, with comments that it's 'dirt cheap, tiny, arguably the sharpest lens for APS-C, and the most useful fixed focal length.' Owners credit it with changing how they shoot people and praise its pleasant bokeh and rendering. The 4.7 Amazon average across 471 ratings reinforces that sentiment.
Two caveats matter. kenrockwell.com is explicit that this DX lens doesn't cover full-frame FX sensors well, so it's strictly a crop-sensor tool. And this particular listing is a Renewed (refurbished) unit, which adds variability that buyers should weigh. Within its intended use, though, the consensus is about as positive as budget primes get.
