What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
For systems limited to 2.5" SATA, the Samsung 870 EVO is the drive reviewers name almost unanimously. High-trust bestbuy.com verified-purchase reviews praise easy installation and reliability, and it carries an enormous ~45,000 Amazon reviews at 4.8 stars. Newegg's listing confirms it maximizes the SATA interface at 560/530 MB/s sequential, and r/hardware commenters describe Samsung SATA drives as 'incredibly reliable compared to some other popular brands.' The recurring theme across high-trust r/buildapc threads is value framing rather than capability.
What reviewers liked
- High-trust Best Buy and r/buildapc consensus on reliability and easy installation
- DRAM-equipped TLC design, the standout among 2.5" SATA options
- Massive ~45,000 verified-purchase reviews averaging 4.8 stars
- Effectively the only remaining premium TLC DRAM SATA choice
Where it falls short
- High-trust community repeatedly calls it overpriced versus NVMe alternatives
- SATA interface caps speed around 560 MB/s; far slower than NVMe
- Legacy 2.5" form factor only makes sense without an available M.2 slot
- Isolated reliability/failure anecdotes in community threads

The recurring theme across high-trust r/buildapc threads is value framing rather than capability. Multiple commenters call it 'overpriced for a SATA drive' and note that if your system has a free M.2 slot, an NVMe drive offers more performance for similar money. One bapcsalescanada thread captures the niche precisely: 'if you need a new TLC DRAM SATA SSD for some reason, then the 870 EVO is basically your only choice now.'
The honest caveats are the SATA ceiling and isolated reliability anecdotes (a few r/buildapc users reported a drive failing), though the overwhelming volume of positive verified reviews suggests these are outliers. For breathing new life into an older laptop or desktop without NVMe support, it remains the reliable default; everyone else should consider NVMe.

It's fine, but quite overpriced for a SATA drive. Basically any SSD is fine for gaming. You don't need to pay the Samsung tax. This WD is $25 cheaper in the US.
