The WD_BLACK SN7100 emerges in our reading as the efficiency-focused sibling to the SN850X. Specialist community r/NewMaxx notes that 'the performance of the SN7100 is this good despite it not having DRAM,' singling out unusually strong 4K QD1 random reads, while servethehome.com confirms its 2TB model's 7,250 MB/s read / 6,900 MB/s write specs sit near the interface limit. A YouTube performance review highlighted that it runs roughly 15°C cooler at idle and takes longer to heat-soak, which is why reviewers favor it for laptops, handhelds, and tight builds.
What reviewers liked
- Specialist r/NewMaxx praises strong 4K QD1 random reads despite no DRAM
- Notably cooler and more power-efficient, ideal for laptops and handheld consoles
- High-trust community calls raw performance nearly identical to the SN850X
- ~5,900 verified-purchase reviews averaging 4.8 stars
Where it falls short
- DRAM-less design relies on Host Memory Buffer; weaker for sustained large writes
- Community comparison threads still favor the SN850X for outright performance
- No verified-tier lab review present in this drive's signals to corroborate subjective verdicts

The WD_BLACK SN7100 emerges in our reading as the efficiency-focused sibling to the SN850X. High-trust r/buildapc discussion comparing it directly to the SN850X concludes raw performance is 'almost identical,' with the SN7100 reaching 7,000–7,250 MB/s reads depending on configuration. The r/laptops community adds that its Host Memory Buffer support keeps it 'perfectly fine' for thin-and-light systems despite the DRAM-less design. Roughly 5,900 verified-purchase reviews at 4.8 stars back this up.
The consensus caveat is the DRAM-less architecture itself: while HMB mitigates it, sustained large-write workloads won't match a DRAM TLC drive like the SN850X, and the high-trust comparison threads still hand outright-performance bragging rights to the SN850X. For efficiency-sensitive use it's an excellent pick; heavy-write users may want the DRAM-equipped option.

The performance of the SN7100 is this good despite it not having DRAM. In particular, it seems to excel at 4K QD1 random reads, even compared much more ...
The SN7100 is supposed to be the upgrade to the sn770 and it advertises speeds on par with the SN850x drives which already aren't far from the sn770.
