What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
The WD_BLACK SN850X is the other heavyweight in the Gen4 tier, and across the reviewers we read it trades blows with the 990 PRO. The verified-tier tomshardware.com review describes performance as 'near the top of the heap in almost every category,' and tweaktown.com frames the BiCS5 NAND upgrade as a 'huge performance boost' over the prior SN850. High-trust r/buildapc discussion is blunt: in head-to-head comparisons against the SN7100, commenters say 'the SN850X is a better SSD,' citing its DRAM-equipped design and 7,200–7,300 MB/s reads.
What reviewers liked
- Verified-tier tomshardware.com rates performance near the top of the Gen4 class
- High-trust community threads prefer it over WD's DRAM-less SN7100 for outright performance
- DRAM-equipped TLC NAND suits sustained workloads and gaming
- Over 17,000 verified-purchase reviews averaging 4.8 stars
Where it falls short
- Earlier SN850 generation had documented AM4 motherboard compatibility issues per r/hardware
- Runs warmer than WD's newer power-efficient drives; benefits from a heatsink
- Premium pricing relative to budget Gen4 alternatives

The SN850X also draws strong value sentiment from specialist sale-tracking communities, where buildapcsales regulars peg roughly $130–140 as the 'sweet spot' for a 2TB Gen4 DRAM TLC drive. With more than 17,000 verified-purchase reviews at 4.8 stars, the retail signal is robust and consistent with expert findings.
The most-cited downsides are historical and situational: r/hardware notes the original SN850 launch was 'plagued with AM4 motherboard incompatibility issues' (since addressed), and the drive runs warmer than WD's newer power-efficient designs, so a heatsink or motherboard cooling is advised in tight builds. As a raw-performance Gen4 pick it remains a top recommendation.

The sn850x is a better ssd and it appears they have it on sale for less on amazon so i'd go with that one.
The 112L BiCS5 in the SN850X is actually the newest BiCS NAND you can get, though 162L BiCS6 is set to enter mass production this year.
