Do I need a freestanding or non-freestanding tent?

Freestanding tents (most picks here) stand on their own poles and are easier to pitch on hard or rocky ground, reposition, and shake out. Non-freestanding designs save weight but require good staking. For beginners, freestanding is the more forgiving choice.
