The consensus
What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the Makita XSH03Z lands as the most well-rounded 6-1/2-inch cordless saw in this pool. protoolreviews.com, a high-trust testing source, called it a "lightweight" saw with "excellent cutting power and some of the best ergonomics," and Makita's own spec of roughly 7.3 lbs with battery and 5,000 RPM lines up with that lightweight-but-capable framing. The 4.6-star Amazon average across more than 1,200 reviews supports the consensus rather than driving it.
What reviewers liked
- High-trust testing source praised cutting power and class-leading ergonomics
- Lightweight brushless design noted for all-day maneuverability
- Strong, consistent 4.6/1230 Amazon average and positive r/Makita consensus
Where it falls short
- Sold tool-only, so batteries and charger add to the cost
- Stock blade described as merely adequate by community reviewers
- One community thread reports a static-discharge failure when paired with a vacuum

Specialist community sentiment on r/Makita is favorable: contributors repeatedly call the brushless XSH03 "best for most people" over the brushed XSS02Z, citing quieter operation and longer battery life, and one user reports running it "95% of the time" over a larger X2 saw, especially when paired with a quality aftermarket blade. The recurring caveat is that the stock blade is merely adequate.
The honest knocks come from the same communities: one r/Makita thread describes a static-discharge incident while using the saw with a vacuum that killed the tool, and runtime is described as solid but battery-dependent. As a tool-only purchase it also assumes you're already on, or buying into, the Makita 18V LXT platform.
- Powerful Makita-built electronically controlled BL Motor delivers 5,000 RPM for faster cutting and ripping
- Automatic Speed Change technology adjusts cutting speed and torque during cut for optimum performance
- The BL Brushless Motor eliminates carbon brushes, enabling the BL Motor to run cooler and more efficiently for longer life
- Efficient BL Brushless motor is electronically controlled to optimize battery energy use for up to 50% longer run time per charge
- The electronically-controlled BL Brushless Motor efficiently uses energy to match torque and RPM to the changing demands of the application
Xsh03 is best for most people. Brushless makes it quieter and longer battery life. But XSS02Z (brushed) is more than good if u want to save $.
Just like the 1st time I felt a static zap will using the saw and vacuum and the saw died not to restart. Love these saws hate to change brands ...
