The consensus
What reviewers found
Synthesized across the trust-weighted source mix below.
Across the reviewers we read, the SKIL DP9505 lands as the best-rounded benchtop for the money. The high-trust expert outlet protoolreviews.com framed it as 'a great option for serious DIYers and woodworking hobbyists with a keen eye for value,' and that value angle is echoed in retailer listings on amazon.com and lowes.com that highlight the induction motor, five-speed range (610–2800 RPM), laser alignment, and LED work light. With 503 Amazon ratings averaging 4.3 stars, the volume of feedback is meaningful rather than anecdotal.
What reviewers liked
- High-trust expert outlet protoolreviews.com endorsed it as a strong value for DIYers and hobbyists
- Five-speed range, laser alignment, and LED work light praised across retailer and community sources
- Large review base (503 Amazon ratings at 4.3) plus a multi-year community owner reporting good service
- Frequently cited as stable and accurate enough for light woodworking
Where it falls short

- A woodworking-group buyer wanted more chuck-to-column depth
- Stepped speeds rather than true dial variable speed, a limitation for frequent metal drilling
- Lower amperage class than premium 3/4HP machines

Specialist communities temper the praise with realistic expectations. A long-tenured owner in r/woodworking (a high-trust thread) said it 'works great for the light duty, loose tolerance work I do,' while flagging an annoyance with the machine — consistent with the broader community view that this is a hobbyist tool, not a precision metalworking press. Another high-trust r/Tools poster shopping this class specifically wanted variable speed for occasional metal, which the SKIL's stepped speeds only partly address. Verified-purchase chatter via a woodworking group called it 'very stable' but wished for more throat depth from chuck to column.
The net synthesis: for wood and general DIY, reviewers agree the SKIL delivers strong features and stability at a price well under the premium brands. Buyers who need tight tolerances or heavy metal work are steered elsewhere by the same sources.

Obviously 5hp is more powerful than 2, (Skil etc.) it really does give you a better "feel" of the wood. I could not calibrate them so that they ...
I need a bench top drill press. 10-12 inch would be great, but I need variable speed so that I can drill some metal when necessary.
