What reviewers liked
- Lowest entry price into the Synology DSM ecosystem
- Large verified-purchase sample (787 Amazon reviews at 4.4/5)
- storagereview.com, androidcentral.com and tweaktown.com all recommend it for entry-level file storage
- Quiet, low-power operation noted across r/synology threads
- Full DSM software support including Synology Photos and basic backup tooling
Where it falls short
- r/synology consensus: 1GB non-expandable RAM is a hard ceiling for any app workload
- Realtek ARM CPU cannot meaningfully hardware-transcode for Plex
- One frequently-cited r/synology thread describes a poor out-of-box experience and return
- Only 1GbE networking - no 2.5GbE upgrade path
- Multiple community voices recommend stretching to a higher tier rather than buying this and outgrowing it
The Synology DS223j is the unit reviewers consistently point to when the budget is the constraint. storagereview.com calls it "a great option for small businesses and families. It may not be powerful, but it does an excellent job with long-term storage," and androidcentral.com calls out "affordability... decent hardware with proven reliability, standout software features." tweaktown.com describes it as "a solid entry-level solution for those wanting control of their data rather than putting it on the cloud."
The honest counter-signal comes from r/synology itself, where the community is openly split. Happy buyers report it handles photos, document backup and light media streaming without complaint. Critical voices warn the Realtek RTD1619B CPU and non-expandable 1GB of RAM mean the unit struggles the moment you try to run apps, Docker, or Synology Photos with a large library - one frequently upvoted comment calls it "a poor choice for anything other than saving and retrieving files." Reviewers are unanimous that this is not a Plex transcoding box. As a strict file-server-and-backup target at the lowest viable Synology price, the consensus is positive; as a do-everything home server, the consensus is to spend more.
- Secure private cloud - Enjoy 100% data ownership and multi-platform access from anywhere
- Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
- Comprehensive data protection - Back up your media library or document repository to a variety of destinations
- 2-year warranty
- Check Synology knowledge center or YouTube channel for help on product setup and additional information
Went through the same dilemma, got DS223j and it's perfectly fine for all my uses cases (photos, movies, backing up to USB drive/cloud etc.).
Photos, is amazing. The Client moved his entire library to the NAS. Couldn't be happier. The App works great and can access from everywhere.
