Reviewers do set expectations: this is an ARM-based two-bay aimed at file storage, backup and light media rather than heavy app workloads, though one community owner was 'surprised how well the DS223 runs Docker' for a few containers. There are dissenting voices—a 'disappointed with DS223' thread and a separate negative DS223j setup experience appear in the data—so the picture isn't uniformly glowing, but the weight of consensus is that it does its core job reliably.
For someone who primarily wants a dependable, well-supported backup hub with Synology's software, the cross-source verdict is favorable.
- One Place for All Your Data - Consolidate scattered files from multiple computers, phones and external drives into one accessible hub with 100% ownership
- Professional File Collaboration - Share projects with clients, sync documents across teams and maintain version control without Dropbox fees
- Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
- DIY Surveillance System - Transform IP cameras into a professional monitoring solution with motion alerts, recording schedules and remote viewing
- 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates
I am surprised how well the DS223 runs Docker. If you are planning to run a few docker containers, the DS223 will get the job done.
I bought a Synology DS223j this week and the whole experience from the start was a complete desaster. Needless to say, I will return the unit.
